Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) Testing is now mandatory by law following the introduction of the Landfill Regulations in 2005. This means that all organisations have a responsibility to dispose of hazardous waste.
The purpose of WAC Testing is to analyse the leaching ability of contaminants in a waste sample in order to identify how they will behave once buried in a landfill. This involves applying an acceptance leaching test, which requires the taking of a representative sample of waste and preparing a leachate in water under specific testing conditions.
As your business is legally obligated to dispose of potentially harmful waste appropriately, it’s vital that any advice you receive comes from a specialist laboratory. The team at Knight Energy Services can assist you in determining what landfill your material should go to, whilst helping you to achieve a full understanding of your materials.
We collaborate with accredited partners to carry out WAC Testing after waste has been classified as either non-hazardous or hazardous by a characterisation test.
There are also different types of WAC tests and the particular type required will depend on the classification of the waste. In other words, waste classification will tell you what the material is and a WAC test will tell you where it can be disposed of.
With over 30 years’ experience in the testing of alternative fuels, KES are trusted specialists in the management of waste. We provide WAC testing to power stations, recycling companies (who produce trommel fines or other types of material which cannot be used as fuel), and waste management companies.
We provide services across the UK and Ireland, as well as the European market. While WAC Testing is a European standard, we are able to tailor our service to local exceptions and the different tests required by each company.
We work with accredited partners to provide a reliable and efficient service, and are always at hand to offer technical and sampling advice to our clients should it be required.

WAC testing is only required for waste destined for these 3 landfills.
The following components are tested as part of a WAC Testing (BS EN 12457) leachate suite:
In addition to the leachate analysis, the following tests are required on the solid waste itself:
